SCHOLARSHIP

Learning and thriving in science are the goals of our scholarship activities. We work to understand how students are learning and experiencing their science education, so that we can foster engaging, productive, and inclusive learning environments.

Our Chemistry Education Research (CER) explores learning activities that promote problem solving and concept construction through team-based learning and strategic use of technology. We work to develop, integrate, and evaluate meaningful active learning activities in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) courses, such as Team-Based Problem Solving Modules for first year chemistry courses.

Literature shows a connection between students’ and scholars’ sense of belonging, STEM identity, and persistence in STEM, especially for people in underrepresented groups in STEM. The scientific field is enriched when scholars from diverse backgrounds, identities, and interests are involved in science. Thus, fostering a sense of belonging, building community, and promoting inclusivity is also an important goal and lens for our scholarship activities. Our work includes developing the Integrated Science Mentorship Network and the Graduate Sisters in Science mentorship program.

If you are passionate about science education, active learning, and building STEM community, reach out to explore research and development opportunities in our group!
