Obituary:

nick's picNick died on July 28, 2019, after suffering a major hemorrhagic stroke. He was 77 years old. He will be missed by his wife, Jan, and three children, Nicki, Pippa (Mike) and Alex (Lisa); as well as his brothers Jeremy (Saroj) and Richard (Shirley). Born in Kent, England, Nick obtained a BSc in Chemistry from Imperial College, London, and a PhD from Sheffield University. After working as a postdoctoral fellow and Fulbright Scholar at Northwestern University, USA, he became a Professor of Chemistry at The University of Western Ontario. Nick's research focused on X-ray crystallography, and he was never happier than when in the lab. As the coordinator of the first-year chemistry course for many years, he also helped to prepare thousands of undergraduate students for careers in science and medicine. Nick spent more than 38 years working in the UWO Chemistry Department. In addition to his beloved Chemistry, Nick's interests included curling, reading, gardening (not always successfully), and sailing. He also enjoyed computer work and firmly believed Linux to be a better operating system than Microsoft Windows. In keeping with Nick's wishes, there will be no funeral. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of London and Middlesex.
